Today’s challenge is to climb Baranco wall without falling down the thousands of meters, but in the good shape we are and the millions of training hours we have put in prior to the climb we don’t foresee any problems. For my sake I am just happy that I do not need to use the hiking poles!
After the usual breakfast of Tanzanian oatmeal, bread and egg we once again got wrapped up in Michelin outfit and wet boots and sat the direction towards the vertical Baranco wall. The spirit was high and the drizzling of rain just continued throughout the morning and made the day just a bit more challenging.
Three hours of strenuous backpack climbing and stumbling feet we finally landed with both feet on safe ground and what a great exercise, adrenalin pumping and a fantastic feeling of being alive. We are just living it.
We had a couple of near misses on our uphill battle, but were as always caught by our always eagle-eyed guides
Coleman and Eligie who have just been outstanding and have impressed each of every one of us with their wealth of knowledge and patience.
The mountain-goat-like athletic porters was another part of making this a great experience, how they climb the wall using both hands to steady themselves while balancing our luggage of 15 kg on they head was amazing to witness and still despite their extra load of luggage, tents, toilet, food, cooking gear they still manage to reach camp prior to us.
We continued towards Karanga camp and arrived around mid afternoon, which gave us time to rest and quick dry our wet clothes in the sun. It remained dry throughout the evening and the fantastic day in Mother Nature ended with a fantastic sunset in the mountain of Kilimanjaro.
