The Crater

After the most restful sleep ever, under a completely starry filled African sky, the following morning we visited the Crater. It was a private paradise surrounded by beautiful landscapes and mountains, scenery to take your breath away.
While wondering through the crater, a male ostrich, right at the moment we approached him, gracefully performed a dance to attract the attention of his female friends. Although not such a colourful animal at first sight, this animated display of such a carefree lifestyle can only bring pleasure to those fortunate enough to see it.
We took a break from driving and walked for a bit around a pool of hippo, their rounded backs only appearing at the surface of the water and coming up for a yawn once in a while. We picked the right moment to be there as it was the time they took a few minutes to sing for us as well!
Once the campsite was packed up for the final time again began our 6 hour journey through this great land to return to Moshi. One would think that such a long ride in the jeep would seem dragged out and boring, not in this case, not at all. There is always something to look at and see along the way. Day and night there are always locals walking on the streets and often in the field, making the long trek several km for water and food, walking children to school or herding cattle from one place to the next. It’s hard to see the number of partially finished homes along the road as the people only earn such small amounts of money that they can only afford to build a home wall by wall. Makes you wonder, if they are not living there, where and in what conditions?
It is really impossible to be able to capture and totally impress on others the incredible experience this safari was. I loved the oh so close proximity it brought me to nature and wildlife through all that we saw, heard and experienced.
Not ready for the safari to end, we arrived back to our hotel in Moshi at about 6:00 pm, unpacked the jeep and shared a local beer with our new found friends Oscar and Jimmy. We thanked them for the kindness they showed us and let them know that they were a big part o f making this experience truly the experience of a lifetime.
